Which Indian Designers Are Known for Luxury Jackets, and How Do They Differ?

Rohit Bal, Ritu Kumar, JJ Valaya, Anamika Khanna, Amit Aggarwal and Tarun Tahiliani each bring a distinct approach to jacket design, and those differences matter more to a buyer than any ranking would. The Rohit Bal label is known for richly embroidered pieces in velvet, silk and brocade, built around signature motifs like the lotus and peacock. JJ Valaya works in a similarly opulent, heritage-driven register — architectural precision and intricate handcraft rooted in royal Indian aesthetics — with his long-running Alika jacket a recurring signature.

Anamika Khanna and Amit Aggarwal lean Indo-western and experimental: Aggarwal is known for sculptural draping and unconventional materials, including industrial and recycled elements paired with traditional embroidery, giving his jackets an avant-garde rather than bridal feel. Tarun Tahiliani sits between heritage and contemporary, pairing structured tailoring with fine embroidery. Torani and Gulabo by Abu Sandeep move further into festive and everyday wear, with lighter embellishment and more accessible pricing than the couture houses above.

Designer	Aesthetic	Known Association
Rohit Bal	Heritage, heavy embroidery, luxurious fabrics	Bridal, sangeet
Ritu Kumar	Traditional, revivalist craft	Ceremony, festive
JJ Valaya	Regal, architectural, opulent handcraft	Bridal, reception
Tarun Tahiliani	Structured couture with fusion elements	Reception, cocktail
Anamika Khanna	Architectural, Indo-western	Cocktail, fashion-forward
Amit Aggarwal	Sculptural, experimental materials	Contemporary, fashion-forward
Torani	Contemporary, playful	Festive, everyday
Gulabo by Abu Sandeep	Light, versatile	Daytime festive

What Styling Possibilities Do Designer Jackets Offer?

Designer jackets offer versatile layering options for both men and women, working across traditional, festive and contemporary wardrobes.

Styling Aspect	Women	Men
With Indian wear	Sarees, lehengas, kurta sets, shararas	Kurtas, churidars, trousers, kurta sets
With contemporary wear	Dresses, skirts and tailored separates	Shirts, trousers and fusion separates
Layering	Worn open, belted, draped or buttoned	Worn buttoned, open or layered over a kurta
Statement styles	Embroidered, embellished, cape and longline jackets	Embroidered bandhgalas, Nehru jackets and statement jackets
Festive styling	Adds texture, structure or a statement finish	Adds polish, structure and formal detailing
Daytime styling	Lightweight linen, organza, cotton or printed jackets	Linen, cotton or lightweight tailored jackets
Evening styling	Velvet, silk, brocade and embellished jackets	Velvet, silk, brocade and embroidered jackets
Occasions	Weddings, receptions, sangeets, festive and destination events	Weddings, receptions, festive celebrations and formal events

The right designer jacket depends on the wedding function and desired aesthetic rather than any single best option. For bridal dressing, longer, richly embellished jackets in heavier fabrics tend to suit the formality of the occasion; for guests and bridesmaids, lighter, more contemporary styles generally offer greater ease and versatility across multiple functions.

Q: Which designer jackets are best for weddings?

A: Heritage designers like Rohit Bal, JJ Valaya and Tarun Tahiliani are popular choices for bridal ceremonies and receptions, known for rich embroidery and fabrics like velvet, brocade and silk. Anamika Khanna's more architectural jackets suit cocktail or fashion-forward wedding events. Browse Wedding Jackets and Capes or Men's Bandhgalas to compare current options.

Q: How do you style Indian and contemporary jackets?

A: Indian jackets like bandhgalas or embroidered women's jackets pair well with churidars, sarees, or lehengas, worn buttoned for formal occasions or open for a relaxed look. Contemporary styles like bombers, capes, or blazers work well over dresses, denim, or separates, styled open for a casual edge or buttoned for structure. Both can be dressed up with statement jewelry or kept minimal, depending on the occasion.

Q: Can jackets be worn over lehengas, sarees or kurta sets?

A: Yes, jackets are commonly styled over all three. A structured or embroidered jacket adds definition to a lehenga, a lighter drape works well over a saree without overwhelming it, and a jacket over a kurta set offers a quick way to elevate daytime festive wear into occasion-ready styling.

Q: Which jackets are suitable for cocktail parties and receptions?

A: Velvet, brocade, and richly embroidered silk jackets suit these events best, since these fabrics hold structure and catch evening light well. Designers like Amit Aggarwal, known for architectural silhouettes, or Tarun Tahiliani, known for structured couture, are popular choices for indoor evening events.

Q: What is the difference between ethnic jackets and Western jackets?

A: Ethnic jackets are cut to sit over lehengas, sarees or kurta sets, often longer and more open at the front, while Western jacket styles follow structured tailoring built for shirts and trousers. Ethnic jackets typically feature hand embroidery or handwoven textiles, while blazers prioritize structured shoulders and a closed silhouette.

Q: What occasions can women wear designer jackets for?

A: Designer jackets suit weddings, receptions, sangeets, mehendi and haldi functions, Diwali and Eid celebrations, cocktail parties, destination weddings, corporate galas, and everyday luxury dressing. The right jacket changes by occasion — heavier embroidery for evening events, lighter fabrics for daytime and outdoor functions.
