Designer Kurta Sets for Women | Aashni + Co

The kurta set has become a versatile staple of the modern festive wardrobe. From lightweight daytime styles to elaborately embellished designs, it can suit occasions ranging from intimate family gatherings to wedding celebrations. Fabric, silhouette, proportion and fit all influence how a kurta set looks, feels and functions throughout an event.

At Aashni + Co, the kurta set forms part of a wider edit of contemporary Indian occasionwear. Founded in London in 2012, Aashni + Co brings together designer Indian fashion for a global clientele.

Choosing a kurta set is ultimately about finding a design that suits the occasion, setting and way you want to wear it. The right combination of fabric, construction and styling can make a considered kurta set work across several celebrations. Designers such as Ritu Kumar, Saina Kapoor, Charu Makkar, Safaa,Aneeka Ruknuddin, Hussain Rehar, ÉLAN and Misha Lakhani offer different approaches to festive and contemporary Indian dressing.

What Exactly Is a Kurta Set and Why Is It Popular for Wedding Season?

A kurta set typically pairs a kurta or tunic with coordinated bottoms such as straight pants, palazzos, shararas or skirts. Contemporary designs may also incorporate a long open-front layer or choga-style jacket over a fitted base. A dupatta may be included, depending on the design.

Its appeal lies in its versatility. A simple printed set can suit a daytime celebration, while an embroidered silk or layered design can take on a more formal character for an evening event. Unlike a fixed three-piece format, contemporary kurta sets can also be styled with or without a dupatta, giving the silhouette greater flexibility.

Aashni + Co's edit includes a range of kurta-set styles, from straight and flared silhouettes to contemporary, handwoven and layered designs.

A well-made kurta set can therefore be a useful foundation for an occasion wardrobe, particularly when you want a piece that can be styled for more than one celebration.

Key Terms Defined

Term	Definition
Kurta	A tunic-style garment that forms the main component of a kurta set, with its length, cut and proportion varying by design.
Choga	A long, open-front garment worn as a layered piece over a kurta or fitted base, creating a more elongated and formal silhouette.
Dupatta	A long scarf or stole traditionally worn with Indian ensembles. It can add colour, movement or a more formal finish to a kurta set.
Zardozi	An ornate form of metal-thread embroidery traditionally used to create elaborate surface decoration on Indian textiles and occasionwear.
Zari-aari	Embroidery worked with a hooked aari needle using zari or metallic thread, typically creating fine chain-stitch patterns and intricate surface detailing.
Gota patti	A decorative technique using narrow metallic ribbon, known as gota, arranged and appliquéd onto fabric in floral, geometric or other ornamental motifs.
Organza	A lightweight, semi-sheer woven fabric with a crisp handle and subtle sheen, available in silk and synthetic fibres.
Chanderi	A lightweight handwoven textile associated with Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, valued for its fine texture, translucency and subtle sheen.

Which Kurta Sets Work Best for Mehendi, Haldi and Pre-Wedding Functions?

The best kurta set for a pre-wedding function depends on the time of day, venue, weather and level of formality. Daytime mehendis and haldis generally lend themselves to lighter fabrics, prints and considered embellishment, while evening sangeets allow greater scope for silk, embroidery and layered silhouettes.

Occasion	What to Look For	Why It Works
Haldi	Lightweight cotton, chanderi, organza or printed sets	Well suited to daytime and outdoor celebrations
Mehendi	Printed, lightly embellished or softly embroidered sets	Offers festive appeal while allowing ease of movement
Sangeet	Embroidered silk, organza or layered choga styles	Provides greater presence for an evening celebration
Wedding guest dressing	Refined embroidery, silk, handwoven textiles or elegant prints	Balances occasion dressing with versatility
Destination wedding	Lightweight fabrics and less restrictive silhouettes	Suits travel, warmer climates and extended celebrations

The same principle applies across designers: choose according to the event before choosing according to the label. A richly embellished layered set may be appropriate for an evening sangeet but less practical for a morning celebration in warm weather.

How Do You Choose Between a Straight Kurta Set, a Flared Set and a Choga-Style Set?

Silhouette	Best Suited For	Consideration
Straight kurta set	Daytime celebrations, pujas, long functions and less formal occasions	Its clean proportions make it highly versatile
Flared kurta set	Mehendis, sangeets and celebrations involving movement	The additional volume creates a more pronounced festive silhouette
Choga-style set	Evening celebrations and statement wedding-guest dressing	The additional layer adds visual impact but may feel warmer outdoors

A straight kurta set is a natural starting point if versatility is the priority. A flared silhouette introduces movement and volume, while a choga creates a more layered and formal effect.

Which Fabric Should You Choose for a Kurta Set?

Fabric should be considered alongside the season, venue, duration and formality of the event. Lightweight cottons, linen blends and chanderi can work particularly well for warm-weather celebrations, while silk and more heavily embellished fabrics can lend greater formality to evening occasions.

Fabric	Best For	Consideration
Cotton / Cotton-silk	Haldis, daytime mehendis and warm-weather celebrations	Can have a more relaxed character than heavily embellished eveningwear
Organza	Daytime and early-evening celebrations	Its crisp surface can crease during extended wear
Silk	Evening celebrations and formal occasions	Can feel warmer or heavier in hot weather
Chanderi	Daytime celebrations, destination weddings and festive dressing	Its lightweight construction suits relaxed occasionwear
Embroidered fabrics	Sangeets, evening mehendis and formal celebrations	Dense embellishment can add weight

A lightweight fabric does not necessarily mean a casual look. Considered embroidery, a distinctive weave or precise tailoring can give a lighter kurta set considerable occasion presence.

How Should You Choose a Kurta Set for Your Proportions?

Rather than following fixed body-type rules, consider fit, proportion, length and placement of detail.

A straight silhouette creates a clean line, while a softly flared kurta introduces movement. A defined waist can add structure, while a longer open-front layer can create additional verticality. The placement of embroidery also affects proportion: detail around the neckline or upper body naturally draws attention upwards, while borders and hems create emphasis lower on the silhouette.

Fit remains particularly important at the shoulders, bust and armhole. A well-fitted kurta can make a greater difference to the overall appearance than selecting a silhouette according to a prescribed body-shape formula.

For made-to-order pieces, check the designer's measurements and alteration options before production begins.

What Is the Right Kurta Set for a Destination or Summer Wedding?

Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen blends, lightweight chanderi or other light textiles for warm-weather celebrations. Straight and softly flared silhouettes can provide ease, while embroidery concentrated around the neckline, sleeves or hem can introduce occasion detail without covering the entire garment.

Destination weddings can involve travel, outdoor venues and long periods between ceremonies. A considered lightweight kurta set can provide a polished finish without relying on dense embellishment or heavy construction.

The distinction is between lightweight and casual. A beautifully constructed cotton-silk or chanderi set with thoughtful embroidery can feel just as occasion appropriate as a heavier design while remaining better suited to warm conditions.

How Should You Accessorise a Kurta Set?

The most considered styling usually comes from allowing one element to lead. If the kurta is heavily embroidered, keep the jewellery restrained. If the outfit is relatively simple, jewellery or a dupatta can provide the focal point.

Jewellery. Consider the neckline and embroidery before choosing earrings, necklaces or bangles. A statement pair of earrings can often be sufficient for a detailed kurta set.

Dupatta. A dupatta can increase the formality of a simpler set. Draped over one shoulder, it creates an uncomplicated finish, while a contrasting tone can introduce another layer of colour.

Footwear. Juttis, block heels and embellished sandals can work according to the formality of the occasion. For destination celebrations, consider both the venue and how long you expect to be on your feet.

The aim is not to match every component, but to create balance between the kurta, accessories and occasion.

How Much Does a Designer Kurta Set Cost?

Designer kurta sets span a broad price range, from printed and lightly embellished styles to heavily hand-embroidered and couture pieces. Fabric, craftsmanship, embroidery, construction, designer and whether a piece is ready to ship or made to order can all influence the final price.

Budget (USD)	What It Typically Offers	Best For	Typical Availability
$150 - $400	Printed, lightweight and lightly embellished kurta sets	Festive daywear, mehendi and first-time buyers	Ready to ship on selected styles
$400 - $700	More detailed embroidery, refined fabrics and contemporary occasionwear	Wedding guests and festive celebrations	Varies by style
$700 - $1,000	More elaborate craftsmanship, silk and embellished sets	Sangeets, evening functions and milestone occasions	Ready to ship or made to order
$1,000+	Couture-level craftsmanship and intricate hand embellishment	Formal celebrations and significant occasions	Typically made to order

Disclaimer: Prices are indicative and represent a general range across designer kurta sets. They can vary according to the designer, collection, fabric, craftsmanship and availability. Refer to individual Aashni + Co product listings for current pricing, delivery information and made-to-order timelines.

The price of a kurta set is influenced by more than the designer name. Fabric quality, construction, embroidery technique and the amount of artisan work involved can all contribute to the final cost.

Kurta Set vs Anarkali vs Sharara Set: How Do You Decide?

Garment	Strength	Right Choice When
Kurta set	Versatility and ease of movement	You want a style that can work across several functions
Anarkali	Graceful volume and an elongated silhouette	You want a more flowing and formal look
Sharara set	Festive movement and visual impact	You are dressing for a sangeet or celebration involving dancing

The choice ultimately depends on the level of formality, movement and silhouette you prefer. Kurta sets offer versatility, anarkalis create greater volume, while sharara sets bring a more pronounced festive character.

What Mistakes Do First-Time Kurta Set Buyers Make?

Choosing purely for the photograph. A photograph can show embroidery and silhouette, but not how a fabric behaves after several hours of wear. Consider weight, construction, climate and movement alongside appearance.

Over-accessorising. A detailed kurta or choga may already contain enough visual interest. Jewellery should complement the craftsmanship rather than compete with it.

Ignoring production timelines. Made-to-order and heavily embellished pieces may require additional time. If you are shopping for an important event, check the specific product's production and delivery information before ordering.

Assuming sizing is standard. Designer measurements can vary considerably. Always refer to the size chart for the individual piece and seek assistance if you need help interpreting measurements.

The most successful purchase is not necessarily the most elaborate one. It is the one that suits the celebration, fits comfortably and can be worn with confidence.

Are Kurta Sets Only for Weddings?

No. Kurta sets can work across Diwali, Eid, family pujas, festive lunches, cultural events, destination celebrations and other occasions that call for polished Indian dressing.

If you are building a versatile festive wardrobe, consider a printed or lightly embroidered set that can be styled differently across occasions. A more understated design may offer greater versatility than an elaborate ensemble reserved for a single wedding.

Kurta sets span festive, wedding, puja, resort and other occasionwear categories, making them a useful option for different types of Indian celebrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Kurta Sets Good for Weddings?

Yes. Kurta sets are particularly well suited to pre-wedding functions such as mehendi, haldi and some sangeet celebrations, where movement and ease can be important. More elaborate sets can also work for formal wedding-guest dressing.

Which Kurta Set Is Best for Mehendi?

A lightweight kurta set in cotton, chanderi, organza or a cotton-silk blend can work particularly well for a daytime mehendi. Printed or lightly embroidered styles offer festive appeal without adding unnecessary weight.

What Is the Difference Between a Kurta Set and a Salwar Suit?

The terms can overlap, but a kurta set is generally used more broadly for coordinated kurta-and-bottom combinations. A salwar suit traditionally refers to a kurta worn with salwar trousers and often a dupatta, although contemporary versions vary considerably.

Which Designers Are Known for Kurta Sets?

Designer kurtas and kurtis are available across a range of Indian and South Asian design aesthetics. Sana Safinaz, Gulabo by Abu Sandeep, Dar-e-Aab, Niti Bothra, Hussain Rehar and ÉLAN offer different approaches to contemporary, traditional and occasion-focused dressing, depending on the collection.

What Is a Choga-Style Kurta Set?

A choga-style kurta set typically combines a fitted base with a longer open-front layer or jacket. It creates a more layered and formal silhouette and can be particularly effective for evening celebrations.

How Much Does a Designer Kurta Set Cost?

Designer kurta sets span a broad price range depending on fabric, craftsmanship, embellishment, construction and designer. Simpler printed and lightly embellished sets generally sit at the lower end, while heavily hand-embroidered and couture styles can cost significantly more.

Can I Wear a Kurta Set Without a Dupatta?

Yes. Many contemporary kurta sets are designed to work without a dupatta. A dupatta can be added when you want a more traditional or formal finish.

What Fabric Is Best for a Summer or Destination Wedding Kurta Set?

Cotton, linen blends, chanderi and other lightweight fabrics are generally well suited to warm-weather celebrations. Choose according to the climate, venue and duration of the event.

Are Kurta Sets Suitable for Different Body Types?

Yes. Rather than following fixed body-type rules, consider fit, length, volume and placement of detail. A well-fitted shoulder and bust area is particularly important to the overall appearance of a kurta.

How Far in Advance Should I Order a Designer Kurta Set for a Wedding?

The timeline depends on the individual piece. Ready-to-ship styles may be available closer to the event, while made-to-order and heavily embellished pieces require additional production time. Always check the specific product's stated delivery timeline before ordering.

Can a Kurta Set Work for Diwali or Eid Instead of a Lehenga?

Yes. A kurta set can offer a refined alternative to a lehenga, particularly for daytime celebrations, family gatherings and occasions where versatility is a priority.

What Should I Look for When Buying a Kurta Set Online Without Trying It On?

Check the designer's size chart, fabric composition, garment measurements, set contents, embellishment details and delivery timeline. If you are uncertain about fit, contact customer care before placing the order.

How Do I Style a Kurta Set for a More Elegant Look?

Choose a structured or embellished silhouette, add a considered dupatta and let one jewellery piece lead the look. Avoid competing statement elements that can overwhelm the outfit.

How Do I Clean and Care for an Embroidered Designer Kurta Set?

Care depends on the fabric and embellishment. Follow the designer's specific instructions and seek professional cleaning advice for heavily embroidered pieces. Avoid machine washing unless explicitly permitted by the care label.

Can a Bride Wear a Kurta Set for Her Own Wedding Functions?

Yes. A bride may choose an embellished kurta or choga-style set for a mehendi, haldi, welcome event or other pre-wedding celebration. The level of embellishment can be increased to distinguish the bridal look from guest dressing.
