Designer Kaftans for Women: A Simple Guide to Resort, Cocktail and Festive Kaftans

A kaftan needs no draping, no pinning and no practice. You put it on and it works. That simplicity is exactly why it has become one of our most versatile categories, worn by three very different women for three very different reasons.

This category tends to serve three kinds of customers: holiday-goers who want something comfortable that still looks like real craft, not a beach cover-up; women who want Indian design in their everyday wardrobe without committing to a full ethnic outfit; and bridesmaids or wedding guests who need one comfortable, elegant piece for a lower-key function like a mehendi lunch or a resort wedding.

This page covers kaftans from $31 to $7,767, a wide range, because the category itself is wide. A simple cotton kaftan and a hand-embellished velvet kaftan gown are both "kaftans," but they solve completely different problems. The guidance below is built around real decisions: which fabric suits heat, which kaftan works for a party and which one is really a gown in disguise.

Kaftans on this page are not primarily bridal wear. A few pieces work for a bridesmaid lunch or a resort wedding function, and we'll flag those clearly. For your main wedding outfit, our lehenga, saree and gown pages are the better starting point. This page is about comfort, ease and everyday luxury, answered directly, question by question.

"Quick answer: Pick a plain cotton or georgette kaftan for travel and daytime heat, a kaftan gown or belted silhouette for cocktail and reception-adjacent events and a heavier embellished piece only for the one or two festive evenings that call for it. Prices on this page run from $31 to $7,767."

What is the difference between a kaftan and a kaftan gown?

A kaftan is loose and unstructured. A kaftan gown is fitted at the waist or bodice, like a dress, with a kaftan-style sleeve or silhouette layered on top. That's the whole difference: structure.

Khushboo & Pankaj make some of the clearest examples of this on our site: velvet kaftan gowns with a defined waist, built more like an evening dress than a loungewear piece. A plain cotton or georgette kaftan from Studio Rigu, by comparison, has no waist definition at all. It's designed to move with the body, not shape it.

Our recommendation: if you want something to lounge in, travel in or wear over swimwear, pick a true kaftan. If you want something you can wear to a party or a reception-style event, pick a kaftan gown. A common mistake is buying a plain, unstructured kaftan for a formal evening, since it will read as loungewear, however expensive the fabric is.

How do I style a kaftan for a cocktail party?

Add a waist. That is the single most useful styling tip for any kaftan at a cocktail party. A belt, a body chain or a kaftan gown with built-in waist definition instantly moves the outfit from "resort" to "evening."

Anamika Khanna's cape-and-kaftan hybrids work well here, since the structure is already built in. If you're wearing a plain or lightly printed kaftan, cinch it at the waist and add heels rather than sandals, since flat footwear keeps the whole look casual, no matter how good the fabric is.

A common mistake: treating an embellished kaftan as automatically "party-ready." Embellishment alone doesn't make an outfit formal if the silhouette is still loose and shapeless.

Our recommendation is to check silhouette first and embellishment second. A well-shaped kaftan in a plain fabric will outperform a loose, heavily embroidered one at a cocktail event.

Can I wear a kaftan to an Indian wedding function?

Yes, for the right functions: a mehendi lunch, a resort wedding or a daytime function, not the main ceremony or a formal reception. Kaftans are comfortable enough for long, casual daytime events, which is exactly what mehendi and haldi functions usually are.

JJV.Kapurthala by JJ Valaya kaftans, with their rich prints and festive colour, are a strong choice for a mehendi or daytime pre-wedding event. For the reception or main ceremony, a kaftan is not usually the right choice. Those functions call for a lehenga, sari or gown and a kaftan will look underdressed by comparison.

Our recommendation: if you're a bridesmaid packing for a multi-day wedding, one kaftan is a smart addition for the more relaxed, daytime functions, but it should be your second or third outfit, not your main one.

What fabric kaftan is best for a hot or humid holiday?

Cotton and georgette are the two best fabrics for heat and humidity. Both breathe well, dry quickly and don't cling to the body, which matters far more on a beach holiday than embellishment does.

A common mistake: packing a heavily embellished velvet or brocade kaftan for a beach holiday because it photographs beautifully, then finding it too warm and heavy to actually wear. Studio Rigu's lighter, simpler kaftans are built exactly for this use case, with minimal structure, breathable fabric and easy packing.

What matters most is this: save embellished, heavier fabrics for evening events at a destination, and pack lighter cotton or georgette pieces for daytime. One kaftan of each type covers a full destination trip far better than several similar heavy pieces.

Is a kaftan only for lounging, or can I wear it out?

No, a kaftan can absolutely be worn out, but the fabric and styling need to match the occasion. A plain cotton kaftan is best kept for lounging or travel. An embellished or printed kaftan, styled with the right accessories, works well for dinner, a resort party or a daytime celebration.

Our recommendation: treat the kaftan the same way you'd treat a simple dress, since the fabric tells you where it belongs. Cotton and linen stay casual. Silk, georgette with embroidery and velvet move up to eveningwear. Payal Singhal's sleeker, Indo-Western kaftans are a good example of a piece built to go from a lunch to an evening event without changing.

What is the difference between a plain and an embellished kaftan?

A plain kaftan has no embroidery or embellishment. The appeal is the fabric, cut and colour alone. An embellished kaftan carries hand or machine embroidery, beadwork or sequins, usually along the neckline, sleeves or hem.

Ritu Kumar and Ri Ritu Kumar are strong choices for embellished, festive kaftans with traditional Indian motifs. If your priority is comfort and versatility, a plain kaftan from a simpler label will serve you better across more occasions than one heavily embellished piece.

A common misconception is that embellishment always adds value. It adds formality, not necessarily comfort or wearability. Our recommendation: buy plain kaftans for everyday and travel use, and choose one or two embellished pieces specifically for festive or evening occasions.

How much does a designer kaftan cost?

Prices on this page run from $31 for a simple printed or plain kaftan to $7,767 for a fully embellished, couture-level kaftan gown. Most shoppers land somewhere in the middle, depending on fabric and embroidery.

Price Tier (USD)	What It Typically Delivers
$31 – $150	Simple cotton or georgette kaftans, plain or lightly printed
$150 – $400	Printed or floral kaftans with light embroidery, semi-formal use
$400 – $1,200	Embellished festive kaftans from designers like Ritu Kumar or JJV.Kapurthala
$1,200 – $7,767	Couture kaftan gowns with heavy embellishment and structured silhouette, from designers like Amit Aggarwal and Anamika Khanna

A common mistake: buying the most expensive kaftan available assuming it's the most versatile. It usually isn't. Our recommendation: set your budget by how often you'll actually wear the piece, not by how impressive the price tag sounds.

What should I wear under a sheer or printed kaftan?

A slip dress or a simple camisole-and-shorts set underneath a sheer kaftan is the standard, comfortable choice. Sheer or lightweight georgette kaftans are meant to be layered, not worn alone.

A common mistake, especially when ordering online: assuming a kaftan is fully opaque based on photographs alone. Always check the fabric description, since georgette, chiffon and some silk blends are sheer or semi-sheer by nature, not a manufacturing flaw.

Our recommendation: for beachwear, wear it over swimwear. For a party, wear it over a fitted slip in a matching or neutral tone, so the kaftan's print or embroidery stays the visual focus rather than competing with what's underneath.

Which designers make the best printed kaftans?

JJV.Kapurthala by JJ Valaya and Ritu Kumar, a designer awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, in 2013, are the two most classic picks for printed kaftans and they suit different customer profiles. Punit Balana, Masaba and Paulmi & Harsh, covered below, round out the rest of the spectrum. JJV.Kapurthala's prints lean rich and heritage-inspired, with deep colours and traditional motifs, better suited to festive daytime functions. Ritu Kumar's prints lean toward classic Indian textile patterns, which work well for both daywear and semi-formal evening use.

Designer	Print Style	Best For
JJV.Kapurthala by JJ Valaya	Rich, heritage-inspired; deep colours, traditional motifs	Festive, heritage-inspired daytime functions
Ritu Kumar (Padma Shri, 2013)	Classic Indian textile patterns	Both daywear and semi-formal evening use
Punit Balana	Lighter, pastel tones; softer aesthetic	A younger, softer everyday look
Masaba	Bold, graphic prints and colour-blocking rather than florals	Customers who want bold prints instead of traditional florals
Paulmi & Harsh	Hand-painted botanical prints layered with aari and zardosi embroidery for a textured, dimensional finish	Customers who want a softer, floral print with added handwork rather than a flat print

Punit Balana is our recommendation if you want something lighter and more pastel, since his prints suit a younger, softer aesthetic than JJV.Kapurthala's heritage tones. Masaba is the right choice if you want bold, graphic prints instead of traditional florals, since her prints lean toward bold colour-blocking and graphic motifs rather than the florals or heritage patterns favoured elsewhere in this category.

Paulmi & Harsh is our pick if you want a hand-painted, botanical print. Their signature aari and zardosi embroidery gives the print a raised, textured finish instead of a flat one, closer to a 1950s-inspired feminine silhouette than a traditional Indian motif.

Our recommendation: match the print style to your personal wardrobe first and the occasion second. A printed kaftan should feel like something you'd genuinely reach for, not a one-time purchase for a single holiday photo.

Which designers make the best embellished or festive kaftans?

Amit Aggarwal and Anamika Khanna lead this category, and both interpret "embellished" differently. Aggarwal's kaftan gowns use structured, almost architectural embellishment, including metallic threadwork and moulded panels, built for a formal evening. Khanna's pieces lean toward fluid drape with embroidery worked into the fabric itself, better suited to a festive function than a stiff, formal one. Zainab Chottani and Sarang Kaur, covered in the table below, offer two more ways into the same category.

Designer	Embellishment Style	Best For
Amit Aggarwal	Structured, architectural embellishment; metallic threadwork; moulded panels	A formal evening
Anamika Khanna	Fluid drape with embroidery worked into the fabric itself	A festive, less formal function
Zainab Chottani	Rich embroidery, softer traditional finish, bridal-influenced handwork	Festive occasions wanting traditional richness
Sarang Kaur	Simpler, lighter embellishment	Festive detailing without full couture weight or price

Zainab Chottani is our recommendation if you want rich embroidery with a softer, more traditional finish, since her background in bridal and occasion wear shows in the level of handwork on her festive kaftans. Sarang Kaur offers a simpler, lighter take on embellishment for customers who want festive detailing without full couture weight or price.

Our recommendation: if you're choosing one embellished kaftan for multiple festive occasions, pick fluid drape over rigid structure. It photographs just as well and is far easier to sit, eat and move in through a long function.

How long does a made-to-order kaftan take to arrive?

Budget 4 to 6 weeks for made-to-order or embellished kaftans, and 1 to 2 weeks for ready-to-ship pieces, plus shipping time. Couture kaftan gowns from designers like Amit Aggarwal can take longer, closer to 6 to 8 weeks, because of the hand embroidery involved.

What surprises most international customers is that the making time, not the shipping time, is almost always the real wait. A kaftan that takes five weeks to embroider makes fast shipping irrelevant if you order it four weeks before you need it.

Our recommendation: if you need a kaftan for a specific trip or event, check the ready-to-ship filter first. It removes the production wait entirely and is the safer choice any time your timeline is under four weeks.

A kaftan earns its place in your wardrobe by being easy: easy to pack, easy to wear, easy to dress up or down. That ease is the whole point, and it's worth choosing kaftans with that in mind rather than by price or embellishment alone. The simplest way to shop this category: buy the plain, breathable kaftan for your everyday and travel wardrobe, and add one embellished or structured kaftan gown for the one or two festive evenings that actually call for it. If your kaftan is for a specific wedding function, check which one first, since daytime and resort functions welcome a kaftan easily, while the main ceremony and reception usually call for a lehenga, sari or gown instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a kaftan?

A kaftan is a loose, flowing garment that falls straight from the shoulders with little to no waist shaping. It usually has wide sleeves and an easy, relaxed fit, which is why it works equally well as loungewear, resort wear or festive dress depending on the fabric and embellishment.

Q: Is a kaftan the same as a kaftan gown?

A: No. A kaftan gown adds waist or bodice structure, closer to a dress, while a plain kaftan stays loose throughout. Khushboo & Pankaj make kaftan gowns with clear waist definition, while Studio Rigu's kaftans stay fully unstructured.

Q: What fabric is best for a beach holiday?

A: Cotton and georgette are best for heat and humidity, since both breathe well and don't cling. Save heavier fabrics like velvet or brocade for evening events during the same trip, not daytime beach wear.

Q: Can I wear a kaftan to a wedding?

A: Yes, for daytime or resort functions like a mehendi or a beach wedding, but not for the main ceremony or reception. JJV.Kapurthala by JJ Valaya's festive prints work well for mehendi functions, specifically.

Q: How much does a designer kaftan cost?

A: Prices range from $31 for a simple printed kaftan to $7,767 for a fully embellished couture kaftan gown. Most festive, embellished pieces from designers like Ritu Kumar fall between $400 and $1,200.

Q: What should I wear under a sheer kaftan?

A: Wear a slip dress or a simple camisole set underneath, since sheer georgette and chiffon kaftans are designed to be layered. Over swimwear works for beachwear; a fitted slip works better for evening.

Q: Which designer makes the best embellished kaftans?

A: Amit Aggarwal and Anamika Khanna lead this category, with Aggarwal's kaftan gowns offering structured, formal embellishment and Khanna's offering softer, more fluid drape. Choose Aggarwal for a formal evening and Khanna for a festive daytime function.

Q: How long does it take to get a kaftan made?

A: Made-to-order or embellished kaftans take 4 to 6 weeks, while ready-to-ship pieces take 1 to 2 weeks, plus shipping. Couture kaftan gowns from designers like Amit Aggarwal can take 6 to 8 weeks due to hand embroidery.

Q: Can a kaftan be worn to a cocktail party?

A: Yes, if it's styled with a defined waist using a belt or body chain, or if it's a structured kaftan gown. A loose, plain kaftan without any waist shaping will read as casual, however good the fabric is.

Q: What is the difference between a plain and a printed kaftan?

A: A plain kaftan relies on fabric and colour alone, while a printed kaftan carries a pattern, often floral or traditional motifs. Punit Balana's pastel prints suit a softer, everyday look, while JJV.Kapurthala's prints suit festive, heritage-inspired occasions.

Q: Is a kaftan a good gift for someone travelling to a hot destination?

A: Yes, a plain or lightly printed cotton kaftan is one of the safest gifts for hot-weather travel, since it suits almost any body type and packs easily. Avoid gifting heavily embellished pieces for this purpose, since they're better suited to evening events than daytime travel.

Q: Do kaftans suit every body type?

A: Yes, kaftans are one of the most universally flattering silhouettes, since the loose fit doesn't depend on a fitted waist or specific body shape. A kaftan gown with waist definition, like those from Khushboo & Pankaj, is the better choice if you prefer a more shaped silhouette.
