Sharara Sets

A Stylist's Guide to Choosing the Right Sharara Set for Your Wedding Functions

Sharara sets are a popular choice for Indian wedding functions because their wide, flared trousers allow greater ease of movement than some more voluminous occasionwear silhouettes. They combine a fitted or semi-fitted kurta with trousers that flare from the waist or hip, and are often paired with a dupatta. The silhouette can work across functions ranging from daytime mehendis to evening sangeets.

A sharara differs from a palazzo and gharara primarily in the construction of the trousers. A sharara typically features a pronounced flare from the waist or hip, while a palazzo has a wide, relatively straight leg and a gharara traditionally features a distinct flare from around the knee. These differences affect the overall proportion, movement and appearance of each silhouette.

This page covers sharara sets from designers currently featured at Aashni + Co, including Ridhi Mehra, Petticoat Lane and Ritika Mirchandani, with a focus on their design approaches, suitability for different wedding functions and place within a broader occasionwear wardrobe.Aashni + Co offers designer Indian fashion to customers across the UK, US, UAE, India and other international markets, including sharara sets alongside other occasionwear silhouettes.

What Is a Sharara Set?

A sharara set typically pairs a kurta or other top with wide, flared trousers known as shararas. Unlike palazzo trousers, which generally have a wide-leg construction with a relatively consistent fall from the hip or thigh, shararas feature a pronounced flare. Ghararas also feature a flare, but traditionally have a distinct seam around the knee, below which the fabric widens.

The construction of the trousers influences the silhouette and movement of the outfit. A sharara's wide flare creates volume and fluidity as the wearer walks or moves, while the overall effect depends on the fabric, length, cut and level of embellishment.

Sharara sets are worn across festive and wedding occasions, including mehendis, sangeets, receptions and other celebrations. Their suitability depends on the formality of the event, time of day, fabric, embellishment and the level of movement required.

Which Designer Should I Buy My Sharara Set From?

Direct answer: For sharara sets, consider designers such as Papa Don't Preach, Itrh and Petticoat Lane, with the choice guided by the event, time of day, fabric, level of embellishment and movement required.

For a daytime mehendi or haldi, lighter fabrics and restrained embellishment can offer greater comfort and ease of movement, particularly for outdoor celebrations. For an evening sangeet or wedding celebration, richer fabrics, more elaborate embellishment and structured silhouettes can suit a more formal setting.

When choosing between Papa Don't Preach, Itrh and Petticoat Lane, assess the individual design rather than the designer alone. Consider the fabric, construction, embellishment and silhouette in relation to the event. A lightweight, lightly embellished sharara can work well for daytime celebrations, while a more heavily embellished style may be better suited to formal evening occasions.

Why Should I Choose a Sharara Set for Weddings and Festive Occasions?

A sharara set combines a kurta or top with wide, flared trousers, often accompanied by a dupatta. The silhouette is used across weddings, pre-wedding functions and festive celebrations, including mehendi, sangeet, receptions, Diwali and Eid.

Its suitability for different occasions depends on the fabric, construction, embellishment and silhouette. Lightweight cotton and printed styles are commonly suited to daytime and warm-weather celebrations, while chanderi, silk, organza and more heavily embellished versions can be appropriate for weddings and formal evening functions.

The wide, flared trouser provides a different construction from a lehenga skirt while retaining a similarly occasion-focused appearance. The amount of flare, fabric weight and embellishment will affect how the outfit moves and feels during extended wear.

For mehendi and daytime festivities, consider the venue, weather and duration of the event when selecting fabric and embellishment. For sangeets, receptions and evening celebrations, more elaborate embroidery, richer fabrics and additional detailing can increase the formality of the look.

This makes the sharara set a versatile option for occasions that call for Indian occasion wear with a flared trouser silhouette, with the individual design determining whether it is suited to a daytime celebration, festive gathering or formal wedding function.

What Fabric Is Best for a Sharara Set?

For mehendi and daytime functions, lighter fabrics such as georgette, chiffon and cotton-silk can offer fluidity and ease of movement. For sangeet and evening functions, silk, net and heavier embroidered georgette can provide greater structure and support more elaborate embellishment.

Fabric is an important consideration when choosing a sharara set because it affects drape, weight, movement and comfort. Lightweight fabrics such as georgette and chiffon allow the flared trousers to move freely, while heavier fabrics and dense embroidery can add weight and reduce the ease of movement.

For outdoor mehendi or destination weddings, consider the climate and duration of the event alongside the fabric. Dense metal-thread or zardozi embroidery can add weight to a garment, while lighter fabrics with restrained embellishment can be more suitable for warm-weather celebrations. Cotton-silk and lightweight georgette can provide a festive finish while keeping the overall garment relatively light.

Ultimately, the most suitable fabric depends on the time of day, weather, venue, level of embellishment and movement required, rather than the fabric alone.

How Much Embroidery Is Too Much for a Daytime Function?

There is no fixed amount of embroidery that is considered too much for a daytime function. The appropriate level depends on the occasion, venue, weather, fabric, garment weight and dress code. Daytime mehendi and haldi functions often accommodate lighter or more restrained embellishment, while evening sangeets, receptions and formal wedding celebrations can accommodate more elaborate embroidery and embellishment.

The type of embellishment also affects the weight and movement of a sharara set. Gota patti, thread embroidery and lighter surface detailing can provide a festive finish without substantially increasing garment weight. Mirror work, zari, sequins and dense metal-thread embroidery can add more weight, particularly when applied extensively across the kurta and sharara.

Lighting can also influence how embellishment appears. Metallic elements, sequins and reflective surfaces can catch both natural and artificial light, while the overall effect depends on the placement, density and finish of the work. Daytime dressing does not require avoiding embellishment altogether; the choice can instead be guided by the formality of the event and the amount of detail appropriate to the setting.

For an outdoor or warm-weather daytime function, consider the combined weight of the fabric and embellishment, particularly if the event involves extended standing, walking or dancing. For an evening sangeet or reception, a more heavily embellished sharara can be appropriate when the dress code calls for formal occasion wear.

The key consideration is not whether embroidery is "too much", but whether the fabric and level of embellishment are appropriate for the event, setting and duration of wear.

Which Sharara Set Suits My Body Type?

There is no single sharara silhouette that is universally suited to a particular body type. The overall appearance depends on the proportion of the kurta, the point at which the sharara begins to flare, the volume of the trousers, the garment length and the placement of embellishment.

For a petite frame, the length and proportion of the kurta can influence how the overall silhouette appears. A shorter or more proportionate kurta paired with a controlled flare can create a more balanced look, while excessive volume may visually dominate the frame.

For a taller frame, a longer kurta or fuller sharara can accommodate greater volume without necessarily overwhelming the silhouette. The flare, trouser length and overall proportions can be adjusted according to the desired effect.

For curvier proportions, the fit of the kurta through the shoulders, bust and waist is particularly important. A structured upper layer paired with a flowing sharara can create definition while allowing movement through the lower silhouette.

Embellishment placement can also influence visual proportion. Detail around the neckline or upper body can draw attention upwards, while borders, motifs and heavier detailing around the hem can add emphasis lower on the silhouette.

Rather than following fixed body-type rules, consider fit, proportion, flare, length and placement of detail. The most important factor is that the sharara is correctly fitted to your measurements and comfortable for the intended occasion.

How Much Does a Sharara Set Cost?

The price of a designer sharara set varies depending on the designer, fabric, construction, embroidery, embellishment, craftsmanship and whether the piece is ready to ship or made to order. Current prices can range from a few hundred US dollars for simpler or discounted styles to several thousand dollars for heavily embellished designer pieces.

Price Range	What It May Include
Under $500	Printed, lighter-weight or lightly embellished sharara sets and selected individual pieces
$500–$1,000	More detailed embroidery, premium fabrics and contemporary occasion wear
$1,000–$2,000	Heavier embroidery, silk-based designs and more elaborate embellishment
$2,000+	Highly embellished designer and couture-level sharara sets

These are indicative ranges rather than fixed price categories. A sharara with extensive hand embroidery, mirror work, zari or other detailed embellishment can cost considerably more than a similar silhouette with minimal surface work. Fabric, construction and the amount of artisan work involved can also affect the final price.

For an accurate price, check the individual product listing, as designer prices, discounts, availability and collections change over time.

How Early Should I Order My Sharara Set?

Order ready-to-ship pieces 1–2 weeks before you need them, and order made-to-measure or heavily embellished pieces 6–8 weeks in advance to allow for fitting and embroidery work.

What surprises most international customers is that production time, not shipping time, is the real bottleneck — a beautifully embroidered sharara set that takes six weeks to construct doesn't move any faster because you've paid for express courier. If you are ordering from the UK, US, UAE, or Australia for a wedding with a fixed date, count backward from the event and order with at least six to eight weeks of buffer for anything involving custom embellishment or made-to-measure fitting. Treat ready-to-ship pieces as the option for last-minute additions, not the heavily worked centre piece outfit.

Styling a sharara set depends on the level of embellishment, neckline, silhouette, occasion and time of day. Jewellery, footwear and the dupatta can be selected to complement these elements without competing with the outfit.

For a heavily embellished sharara set, consider simpler jewelry or fewer statement pieces so that the embroidery and surface detailing remain prominent. For a lightly embellished or printed set, statement earrings, necklaces or bangles can add additional detail. The neckline and embroidery placement can also influence whether earrings or a necklace works better with the outfit.

A dupatta can be draped over one shoulder, around the arms or in other styles depending on its fabric, border and embellishment. Heavier dupattas may require more structured draping, while lighter fabrics such as chiffon or georgette can offer more fluid styling options.

Footwear should take the venue and duration of the event into account. Heels can complement a formal sharara set, while flats, juttis or low heels can provide greater ease for functions involving extended walking or dancing. The length of the sharara should also be considered when selecting footwear to ensure the trousers do not drag on the floor.

For a cohesive look, consider the embellishment, proportions and formality of the complete outfit rather than matching every accessory to the sharara set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a sharara and a gharara?

A sharara flares from the waist or upper hip, while a gharara has a fitted section through the upper leg before flaring at or below the knee. The key difference is the point at which the flare begins.

Is a sharara comfortable to wear all day?

Yes, a sharara set is one of the comfortable outfits. However, the level of comfort depends on the fabric, fit, construction, embellishment and garment weight. A well-fitted sharara can allow ease of movement, while heavier fabrics or dense embellishment may make extended wear less comfortable.

Can I Wear a Sharara Set for Different Wedding and Festive Occasions?

Yes. Sharara sets can be worn for mehendi, haldi, sangeet, wedding receptions, festive dinners and other celebrations. The appropriate fabric, embellishments and silhouette will depend on the time of day, venue, weather and formality of the occasion.

For daytime or outdoor functions, lightweight fabrics and restrained embellishment can be suitable, while evening and more formal occasions can accommodate richer fabrics, heavier embroidery and more elaborate detailing.

How far in advance should I order a sharara set?

The required lead time depends on whether the sharara is ready to ship, made to order, or requires alterations or customization. Check the individual product's production and delivery timeline and allow additional time for fitting or alterations where required.

How Should I Accessorise a Sharara Set?

Choose jewellery and footwear according to the embellishment, neckline, styling and occasion. Pair heavily embellished sets with understated jewellery, while simpler styles can accommodate statement pieces. For footwear, juttis, embellished flats or heels can work depending on the venue, dress code and level of movement required.

Can wedding guests and bridesmaids wear sharara sets too?

Yes. Sharara sets can be worn by brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests, with the choice of fabric, silhouette and embellishment adapted to the formality of the occasion and the wearer's role.

What if my made-to-measure sharara set doesn't fit correctly when it arrives?

Made-to-measure sharara sets are created according to the measurements provided at the time of order. If the fit requires adjustment after delivery, contact customer care and check the applicable alteration, return or exchange policy. Minor fit adjustments may also be carried out by a tailor.

How do I clean and care for an embellished sharara set?

Follow the designer's care instructions provided with the garment, as cleaning and storage requirements vary by fabric and embellishment. For specific care or cleaning queries, refer to the product information or contact the designer's support team for guidance.
